Sevanjali - The Commitment to Serve

“BAPL has formulated a holistic need-oriented CSR approach that aptly captures four relevant attention areas: education, rehabilitation, healthcare and overall social infrastructure.

Our Vision encompasses a responsibility that goes far beyond its fundamental accountability to its business shareholders. Our CSR is targeted to a broader audience, including key customers, employees and, most importantly, the people of communities in which we operate. The approach is strategic in nature and is devised with identified and specified CSR components: each directed towards bringing in an enriched perceived value for the company practicing it on one hand and making a significant difference in the lives of the intended audience on the other.”

Educational initiatives

A total of 11 primary schools were supported by BAPL for developing infrastructure to ensure primary education among children. Also, an assessment showed that secondary schools lacked facilities such as library, computer and science laboratory. Of the eight high schools identified, libraries and computer laboratories have already been set up in five.

Medical camps are organized on a weekly basis to cater to basic healthcare needs of women and children of adjacent villages. The camps are organized to advise them on the prevention of various water and airborne diseases. Since the inception of these medical camps in 2010, BAPL has reached out to more than 26,000 women and children in project-affected villages.
BAPL also organizes eye checkup and cataract screening camps each year. BAPL has already reached out to more than 1,500 patients. More than 400 patients have undergone cataract surgery and lens implant at MP Birla Eye Clinic, Kolkata. All logistical and surgical expenses were borne by the company.

Developing social infrastructure

BAPL undertook a major initiative of diverting a 4-km road to facilitate access to Ukhra and Khandra villages under the Ichapur Gram Panchayat. The required lands for the road were procured by the company for the benefit of the local people. This development was crucial to operationalize the airport. Other infrastructure developments include constructing PCC road in adjacent villages and developing children’s park.

Other community development activities

During the months of summer, BAPL provides drinking water by containers to villages under the Ichapur and Ukhra Gram Panchayats. These villages face acute water shortage as ground water table declines alarmingly during summer.
In 2016, 65 bicycles were donated to marginal farmers affected by HT line diversion works. The bicycles were donated to facilitate alternate livelihood solutions for the project-affected people.
Throughout the year, BAPL organizes various events to celebrate Children’s Day, World Environment Day, Women’s Day etc. by engaging students and youths of local communities. Various social and environmental themes are chosen to create awareness among participants.

Aeroplane joyride for students

Twelve children from project affected villages were taken for a joyride on the maiden flight from Kolkata to Durgapur. The children cheered as their joy knew no bounds that their dream of flying will finally come true.

Resettlement and rehabilitation

In accordance with the R&R policy, each homestead plot acquired for the project has been compensated by alternate developed land near the project area, over and above compensation for land and structure. Altogether 34 affected families have been provided alternate land in close vicinity of the project, which are duly registered.
